With the Golden Globes just days away, it’s no secret the celeb’s and they’re stylists are going mad perfecting every last detail. But, what about the hair & makeup? Here’s a look into a few must have products, that are a major staple for those walking the red carpet this Sunday:
To get that glowing complexion, stars turn to Gleam Body Radiance by Melanie Mills to give the perfect amount of sheen without taking too much attention away from the rest of their look. Applied lightly onto areas of the body, this creamy formula delivers the ultimate “golden glow” and comes in a variety of shades, “Light Gold, Rose Gold and Deep Gold” to name a few. Not only does this product bring the shine, it also helps to conceal stretch marks, pigmentation, scars or any other imperfect that can be spotted. Fans of the brand include Kendra Wilkinson, Brandi and Pamela Anderson. Prices range from $15-$40, can be purchased online.
To keep makeup lasting all night long, Laura Mercier’s Radiance Foundation Primer is another must have. Nicknamed “The Candlelight Glow”, The universal pearl tint creates a soft focus effect to minimize the look of imperfections with a radiant finish (perfect for posing on the red carpet!) in addition to long lasting results. Retailing for $32. Fans of the brand include Jessica Lowndes, Kate Bosworth and Cameron Diaz.
And lastly, no big awards show can be complete without loads of lashes! Ardell brand tend to be a favorite for many Celebrity Makeup Artists, as they’re easy to apply, natural looking and come in a wide range of styles, perfect for any glamour gal! My pick? I personally love the #114′s and #118′s, as they blend well into normal lashes and can easily be layered up with other styles. Kim Kardashian and Giuliana Rancic are fans of the brand.
The drop in temperature and the harsh winds zap the moisture from our skin. Keeping your skin hydrated takes extra effort – and additional space in your medicine cabinet – as you switch to a richer day and night cream and guzzle water to keep you hydrated from the inside out. Plump, moisturized skin starts with your skincare, but you can achieve a dewy, glowy complexion in the winter with the help of a few cosmetics. Before you swear off the possibility of a glowing face, grab the following products and make a slight change in your makeup routine.
Primer
Most of us apply a primer before our makeup to create a flawless, even canvas and help our makeup last through happy hour. In the winter, get your hands on a primer to brighten and hydrate. If you have oily or combination skin but are suffering from surface dehydration, try Smashbox’s Photo Finish Hydrating Foundation Primer, $42. This product is oil-free but contains Hydraplex, a desert plant extract, to immediately hydrate and seal in moisture. Normal to dry skins will love Benefit’s “that gal” brightening face primer, $29. This pearlescent primer has a bit of a rosy tint and contains light-reflecting pigments to illuminate the skin. If your skin tends to get irritated from the cold, you’ll appreciate the soothing chamomile in this primer.
Foundation
Winter is the time to put your powder foundation into storage and switch it out for a lightweight tinted moisturizer. Not only does your skin need the extra hydration, but powder will stick to dull, dead skin and emphasis the dryness; and thick, heavy foundations will just aggravate your winter-induced sensitive skin. If you’re a Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer devotee, you’ll love the Illuminating formula, $43. Its “Dewy Complex” will keep the skin moisturized while making your skin look naturally radiant. If you want a little more coverage, try Armani’s Face Fabric, $49. Super lightweight, Face Fabric has a mousse-like texture and glides on skin effortlessly. The coverage is light, but its Micro-fil technology blurs lines and imperfections for a flawless look.
Cheek Color
To keep your skin looking radiant and youthful, finish the look with a cream blush and a bit of highlighter on the cheekbones. An InStyle blush winner for over seven years, Stila’s Convertible Color, $25 will add the perfect pop of creamy color to cheeks. Pat a bit of Petunia onto the apples of the cheeks for an ethereal look. Top the look off with Benefit’s High Beam for extra luminosity.
The Perfect Gifts For the Beauty Mavens on Your List
What better way to make the holidays just a little more beautiful, than with some of the best beauty gifts. Everyone from moms to daughter to sisters (and you!) will love everything on this list.
Stila Lip Glaze Set: This is always in my Christmas stocking! Stila Lip Glazes are one of the best in the business, and with their glassy shine and gorgeous colors and only $25, you can’t go wrong. You’ll get eight different colored lip glosses with six limited edition colors and two of the bestselling shades. It’s a great way to try new shades and the set of glosses will last you about year…just in time for the next holiday set!
Laura Mercier Deluxe Travel Brush Collection: Everyone loves and needs a great set of makeup brushes but sometimes it can be hard to justify buying nice ones for yourself. So why not gift this super luxurious set to your mom or sister (or yourself… no judgement). The sleek carrying case actually stands upright for each use on your vanity and the collection comes with everything necessary to create a flawless face. You’ll get five brushes but get this, four of them are double sided so you are really getting nine brushes for your cheeks, face, eyes are lips. It you bought each brush individally it would be $252 so how exciting is the $95 price tag?!?
Jewelry Box By Julep: Three words…Oprah’s Favorite Things! Yes even though the queen of all media is no longer doing her daytime show, Oprah has not deprived us of her favorite things. (Thank goodness!) This year Julep’s gorgeous nail polishes made this list, and I could not be happier. I consider myself lucky to live near the Julep parlors since they are by far the best manicures in the business. For the holidays, and Oprah, Julep put together a white laquer box with twelve beautiful toxin-free polishes. Colors include, hot pinks, watermelons, nudes and mint greens, just to name a few.
Philosophy Home For the Holiday Set: Everytime I walk into Sephora I beeline it to the Philosophy display to smell their delectable body washes and shampoos. The scents are so indulgent and I have a hard time buying them for myself, so I think they make the perfect gift. This holiday season Philosophy put together a gift basket filled with body washes and lip shines like Sparkling Cranberry and Cinnamon Bun. At $38, I think this is perfect for the younger sister, daughter or cousin on your list.
Clarisonic Mia in Bordeaux: This is the must have skincare device in fall’s must have color. Beauty editors, celebs, dermatologists and aestheticians agree, the Clarisonic is a must have for anyone who wants beautiful skin. (That’s everyone, right?) It removes six times as much dirt and makeup as regular face washing, reduces dry skin, oil and blemishes and I swear I am seeing fewer wrinkles. At $150 it’s a bit of a splurge but something anyone on your list will love and thank you for for years to come!
As the seasons change, it’s important to switch up your makeup, but the good news is summer’s switch is one of the easiest. With it’s light foundations, unfussy eyes, and simple lips, summer makeup is a cinch to pull off. To make your perfect summer look even easier to accomplish, I’ve compiled five items that are must haves in your makeup bag. Not only will these five items ensure you look your best this summer, but they also work together to create a quick, summery, polished look in no time. So you can be out the door to enjoy a little summer R&R.
Sunscreen is one of the MOST IMPORTANT things to wear all year round, but in the summer, it’s not negotiable. You need a high SPF, but no one wants that goopy, sticky feeling under their makeup. That’s why I love this Kate Sommerville SPF 55 Serum Sunscreen. Celebs like Cameron Diaz and Nicole Richie love this sunscreen, and you will too since it has a a great texture. You can learn more about it in my reviewhere.
Tinted Moisturizer is my foundation of choice during the the warm summer months because I get coverage, but it’s light enough that my skin can still breath. You can easily apply tinted moisturizers with your fingers, and the formulas are goof proof. Plus, they look chic, yet low key enough for summer’s relaxed fashions. I’m obsessed with this one from Laura Mercier because it has an SPF 20, great coverage, and leaves my skin feeling hydrated. All of which contribute to a beautiful, dewy look that’s ideal for summer.
Bronzer is something most of us use year round, but for summer, it’s essential. The important thing is to make sure you pick the right one for your complexion, and apply it with a big fluffy brush. Since I use mine frequently, I’m happy to make it a bit of a splurge…so I love this Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder. While it will run you $50, it is well worth the money for the gorgeous bronzy glow it creates. Just a quick swish, and you look like you’ve been sunning yourself in San Tropez!
Bright Lips are everywhere, as I’m sure you’ve seen on the red carpet, in fashion mags, and all over style blogs. They are such an easy way to wake up your face and make your eyes sparkle, so they are a must for summer. While I love a nude lip a la’ JLO in the early 2000′s, a bright lip is so sexy and summery this season. To make it super easy, skip liners and lipsticks and go with a fool proof products like Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm. It’s soothing, comes in fab bight colors, and it’s easy to apply…even at the beach!
ShimmerBricks, like this one from Bobbi Brown, are a great multi purpose product that can seamlessly take your look from day to night. Use the lightest shades in a “C” shape from your temple, across your cheekbones for a highlight, and in the inside corners of your eyes. Swirl the colors together to create a shimmery blush or iridescent shadow, and you are ready for a hot summer night.
It’s about time! Beloved spa and beauty retailerbluemercury, which has long held court in Dupont Circle, Farragut North and Georgetown, has branched out of the city and into Arlington, Virginia. That’s great news for NoVAers who can’t quite make it into the district on crazy days, yet still need to satiate their insane inner beauty junkies (we all have those urges during our commutes home, right?). The new store is a much-needed addition to the always-buzzing Market Common Clarendon.
AMBIENCE
Just like every other bluemercury store in the area, the Clarendon location is a pristine, wall-to-wall beauty feast for the senses. There are the expected brands, of course – NARS, Kiehl’s, Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier and Trish McEvoy, to name a few. Mingling among those are a variety of equally beloved brands that fly a little lower on the radar – think Dennis Gross, Darphin and Revive. If you can tear yourself away from the bottle-laden shelves and color-filled counters, you may wish to direct your attention to the spa. The extensive menu includes everything from glycolic peels and microdermabrasion to waxing and facials.
EXPERIENCE
Stepping inside a bluemercury store has always been a rather therapeutic experience for this beautyholic, mainly because DC’s hustle and bustle leave me craving the kind of peace and relaxation that this chic boutique happens to exude. While Clarendon is far more relaxed than the city, the new bluemercury store is just as soothing to the senses. There’s a certain calm involved with the store’s incredibly neat aesthetic, and that, coupled with the vast array of must-have merchandise makes it a rather memorable experience – and that goes for anyone, whether they’re new to the store or inordinately familiar.
