A RETURN TO MINIMALISM WITH GUIDO PALAU

Spring/Summer 2013 Hair Trends

Creative Consultant Guido Palau for Redken is found behind every fashion show styling the tresses of the world’s most sought-after models, not only preparing them for their walk down the runway but creating hair trends that leave us wishing we were experts  wielding a hairbrush and blow-dryer, and thanks to Redken we can achieve runway locks at home with these mini tutorials.

For Spring/Summer 2013 Guido gives us his predictions, a return to simple and modern minimalism.

”This season, designers wanted to achieve different textures and really push the artistic boundaries of hair. There were a lot of references to the mid-90s, when minimalism came into fashion, and also the 60s. It was about attitude and technique-nothing was left to chance.” Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

There are 4 key looks this season, all pushing the boundaries of traditional styling, paying homage to the 60’s and mid-90’s.

The first is Modern Minimalist, a reinvented twist on straight hair styled with precision. Examples are seen at Celine, Versace and Roberto Cavali. To achieve the look Guido used Satinwear 02 Prepping blow-dry lotion, centered a precise part, blow-dried and finished with a flat iron. Optional is gathering your tresses into a low ponytail and polishing your look with Shine Flash 02 Finishing Mist for incredible shine.

Factory Girls is paying tribute to the structured styles of the 60’s.  At Marc Jacobs Guido combined Studio 54 with NYC Street Style, targeting sections with guts 10 root volume spray foam to damp hair before blow-drying straight.  After creating a deep side part he misted locks with quick tease 15 backcombing finishing spray on the roots for height.  Finally gathering hair into a low ponytail he sprayed refresh 01 aerosol hair powder/dry shampoo and pulled out a few wisps so that hair doesn’t look structured and overdone.

Deep Impact is super chic, grungy and utterly urban. Perfect examples were showcased at Calvin Klein, Diesel and Lanvin, modified for either a less-is-more or free-flowing style that represents modern femininity. Guido rough dried hair after applying full frame 07 volumizing mousse. Creating the classic side part he next applied powder grip 03 mattifying hair powder for an unrefined and polished look.

Double Vision is creating a dual-textured style seen at Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone.  A good example is the updated ponytail, to create this modern version Guido first blow-dried hair with All Soft Argan 6 Multi-Care Oil, gathering hair into a tight-to-the head ponytail. Curling the end of the ponytail with a conical curling iron he finished the look with fashion work 12 versatile finishing spray for texture and flexible hold.  If you want to get runway inspired you can add a strip of tape to your center part as seen at Alexander Wang.

My parents live in Tracey, CA and luckily for me I can visit Emily at the local Master Cuts, where she listens and trims my bangs, helping me maintain the bangs of my dreams.  I love Emily, she’s patient as I sit in my chair obsessing over my bangs.  On my recent visit she was swamped, her shift was ending and still she allowed me to sit in the chair until we were both satisfied with my trim.

Banging it in the City

Side-Swept, Brow Skimming to the Roony Mara Fringe Bangs are the New Accessory

Anita Rivas  Posted Monday, July 9, 2012 by ,

Where to FindBangs aren’t just a beauty trend seen in Hollywood, but a fashion statement that gives an air of mystery. They also help hide facial imperfections and update an existing hairstyle.

They also help frame your eyes, and are seen on women of all age groups, from the Marina to the Mission.

Trend Alert: A trend that started in the 60’s has become the new go-to fashion accessory for every fashionista desiring a more modern hairstyle.

From side-swept, brow skimming to the Roony Mara fringe bangs are here to stay.

Getting the Look: Achieving the bangs of your dreams requires research, asking your hairstylist the right questions is important, don’t forget to bring in a picture, and most important be realistic. If you have a cow-lick, make sure to inquire about the Keratin Express, the Opti Smooth by Matrix, or the Redken Shape Control – all three will keep your bangs smooth and straight for 4 to 6 weeks.

It took me almost a year to finally get the bangs of my dreams, it was trial and error, but I finally found a hairstylist that got me.

Flaunt High-Fashion Hair In Between Salon Visits

Take Your Look to the Next Level with Redken’s Style Connection

Shayneice Elaine  Posted Wednesday, June 6, 2012 by ,

There is something completely satisfying about that feeling you have after a fresh salon blow-out. Is it the vivacious body and bounce that your mane seems to be showcasing? Or could it be the texture and fullness that you feel when you run your fingers through your hair? A trip to the salon can dramatically revitalize a dull and commonplace day into a uniquely pleasurable experience….well, that is, if you have a great stylist. The reality, however, is that many of us simply do not have the applicable resources to do this as often as we’d like. And once the blow-out falls flat, the fuss begins…you know, the dramatic ten min pout session before you just opt for a simple ponytail. Well…save it. Luckily someone felt your pain (the folks over at Redken) because Style Connection is now available to intercept your run-ins with dull.

The Style Connection Collection by Redken is the groundbreaking advancement in surface shifting stylers, that of which complement professional creations through eliciting vivid textures, and accenting finishes. Style Connection is the link between visits to the salon (hence the word “connection” in the title.)

So you want that salon blow-out but you aren’t able to visit the salon? Try Redken’s Style Connection Velvet Gelatine 07, a cushioning blow-dry gel that is applied through damp hair prior to blow drying. As the gel melts onto the surface of the hair, it amplifies overall body and bounce. In its effect, the cushioned finish leaves hair with a silk-like texture.

Top it off  by adding a light mist ofShine Flash 02 onto blow-dried hair. Shine Flash O2 is a shine boosting glistening mist that adds a high-gloss, yet natural shine without all the excess weight, grease, or stickiness. The Camelina Oil and Vitamin B5 ingredients are also just as much conditioners as they are shine boosters.

Style Connection’s Powder Grip 03 takes styling to the next level. All you have to do is apply a small amount and brush evenly through the hair. What happens next is brilliant! Powder Grip 03 provides hair with a matte texture - minus all of  that product build-up. When applied directly onto the roots, Powder Grip 03works as a volumizer as well. ”To me, powder grip 03 mattifying hair powder is genius – it creates maximum hold and volume, yet is so lightweight it feels like there’s nothing in your hair,” says Rodney Cultler, Redken Brand Ambassador and Owner of Cutler/ Redken Salons. But wait! There’s more! This new super powder also extends the life of a blow-out! It does it all in just seconds.

In even better news, these new cutting edge products are totally affordable (under 20 bucks each). ” The result is this larger-than-life texture that I could normally only create for my clients by layering in both a volumizing product and a hairspray. It’s the perfect solution, whether you’re trying to achieve beachy texture and separation, or build the base for a long-lasting updo, yet easy to apply at home or on the go.”-Rodney Culter.

Styling Tips for Dehydrated Hair

Here’s to Happy Styling!

Anita Rivas  Posted Wednesday, March 21, 2012 by ,

Quenching dehydrated hair during the winter can help to avoidstatic cling, split ends, and dull lifeless looking hair. The question is: How does one successfully chase away thosewinter blues and maintain gorgeous locks all season long?

Natasha Sunshine, Colour Care Ambassador for Pureology gives us a few tips to keep our tresses shiny, hydrated and gorgeous this winter.

  1. Keep a travel sized bottle of Evian or La Roche-Posay mineral mist in your makeup bag, a little mist will remove static and add life to hat hair. Remember to mist from 12” away to avoid ruining your blowdry.

Use lots of conditioner; avoid washing your hair daily and use a hair mask or leave-in conditioner on a daily basis. Deep conditioning treatments work wonders for dehydrated hair, leave in for a minimum of 5 minutes if your pressed for time.  Recommended masks are Pureology’s Hydrate Conditionerand HydraWhip Masque.

Styling hair with deep nourishing products is ideal, applying a leave-in hair conditioner to the ends your hair works miracles, a perfect oil is the New Argan-6 by Redken. This amazing light oil goes on wet or dry, melting over your hair, infusing it with complete hydration.

Hair is silky soft, shiny and luxuriously healthy. Argan-6 can be mixed with your other favorite haircare products or used before your shampoo to intensify hydration. The results are salon worthy.

Try not to use too many hot beauty tools, allowing your hair to naturally dry a few times a week makes for healthier hair.  Alternate using your blowdryer or iron, by opting for one or the other.

Winter hair doesn’t have to be a chore, arm your tresses with the right haircare products, spend a few extra minutes air-drying or masking with a deep conditioner.  Your hair will love you for it.

Preserving Your Haircolor for Long-Lasting Salon Color

Extending Life to Healthy Color Treated Hair

Anita Rivas  Posted Monday, February 6, 2012 by ,

Preserving hair color is one of the many beauty challenges women face, especially if you’re addicted to washing your hair on a daily basis.  Whether you frequently visit your colorist or use boxed dye - your color will fade. The only difference being that professional color is stronger and will last a few days to a week longer then boxed dye.

The question is: How exactly do you preserve your salon color treatment or at home color? First we need to discuss why color fades.  Color fades when the hair cuticle is unhealthy, when the cuticle is exposed to heat from styling tools and other harsh chemicals in our day-to-day haircare products.

Preserving hair color is easier then we think, read below to see what the experts have to say about maintaining salon worthy color after your salon visit.

Skip the habit of frequently washing your hair, as my colorist explained “Your color is like cashmere, you don’t wash your cashmere every day do you?” The answer is no, cashmere gets dry cleaned and not on a daily basis.  What to do? Wet your hair in the shower and deep condition with a mask for color treated hair; this gives you the feeling of washing your hair without stripping away color. If you’re the type to use dry shampoos there are several good ones we recommend: Pronto Dry Shampoo by Oscar Blandi, Meta Revive by Serge Normant or an old tried and true Dry Shampoo by Klorane.

A few examples of hair masques for color treated hair:

Pureology:  Hydrate Hydra WhipEssential Repair Masque, or Perfect for Platinum Reconstructing Repair Masque. Rene Furterer:  Okara Radiance Enhancing Conditioner. Leonor Greyl:  Masque Quintessence.

Serge Normant: Meta Morphosis Hair Repair Treatment.

Use haircare for color treated hair – shampoos or conditioners that leave behind color deposits are best, but using a haircare collection specifically for color treated hair works too.

Color Extend by Redken, is a collection designed to gently cleanse, detangle, hydrate, and deliver superior anti-fade protection to color treated hair.  Another recommendation is Beautiful Color by Oribe, a three step collection that targets damaged areas and delivers intense moisture for gorgeous salon worthy hair.

If you find yourself in-between appointments there are several at-home tricks that you can use to extend the color of your hair. Rinse after you condition with cool water, this helps close the cuticle preventing penetration of heat from styling tools or chemicals from haircare products that are not designed for color treated hair.  If your grey or roots are starting to show a quick fix is the Pronto Root Touch-Up Pen by Oscar Blandi, another amazing Oscar Blandi tool is the Dry Styling Heat Protecting Spray; hair is infused with nourishing oils and stays gorgeous all day.

There are a few at-home glazes we can use to help keep our hair colorshiny and bouncy:

Oscar Blandi at-Home Salon Glaze helps by infusing hair with Olive Oil and Vitamin E, protecting hair from damage and leaves tresses silky smooth and shiny.  Another tried and true is John Frieda’s Luminess Glaze – with or without color deposit, hair is left luxuriously shiny and healthy.

We need to remember that the styling tools we use are equally as important.  Blow-dryers are not all created equal, we recommend using tools by Sam VillaAmika and Olivia Garden because the haircare tools you use make a huge difference in the health of your hair.
