OzThough film lovers are waiting with bated breath to see whether Oz The Great and Powerful meets expectations, beauty junkies, at the very least, have good reason to rejoice. The upcoming Disney feature film, adapted from the classic L. Frank Baum novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, is the inspiration behind OPI’s new nail polish collection.

OPI is very excited to take this fantastical journey with Disney,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director. “Inspired by the magic of Oz The Great and Powerful, this SoftShades collection captures the whimsy seen in the film.” The limited-edition range includes six stunning colors, plus a new addition to the Liquid Sand collection:

Lights of Emerald City: A party in a bottle, this white confetti-tinged polish dazzles with a sparkling, shiny finish.
Don’t Burst My Bubble: Pale, pretty and as prim as Dorothy herself, this color leaves nails with a coat of classy, warmed up white.
When Monkeys Fly!: Those scary monkeys have nothing on this bold and beautiful nail polish, which is infused with chunky gold glitter.
Glints of Glinda: Glinda the Good Witch may be one of the loveliest fictional characters in existence, so it’s fitting that this eponymous beige nail polish is equally posh.
Which Is Witch?: Pump up any party look with this glittery, disco-ball inspired color that flashes iridescent beneath the lights.
I Theodora You: For a look that’s simply darling – and incredibly versatile, too – try this soft and delicate pink.
What Wizardry Is This?: A new member of the OPI Liquid Sand line, this deep taupe, matte polish dries to a textured finish. The color itself was designed in honor of James Franco’s character (the Wizard of Oz).

Perfect to see you through spring and into summer, the range reflects the upcoming season’s mood beautifully. Whether your preference is sweet and demure or bold and party-perfect, there’s a shade in this mix to suit any occasion.

Availability: The collection will launch in March 2013 at professional salons, including Beauty Brands, Beauty First, Chatters, Dillard’s, jcp Salons, Pure Beauty, Regis, Trade Secret and ULTA for $9 each.

Nailing it with Universal Grey

Grey is the New Neutral

Anita Rivas Posted Tuesday, May 15, 2012 by ,

Where to Find: Grey is one color that transitions seamlessly from Fall/Winter into Spring/Summer with various shades, going from light to dark.

Grey is that universal color that can be worn with anything, from your concert t-shirts to your spring dresses, or combat boots and ballet flats. This trend can be seen on women going to work in the financial district or Union Square.

Trend Alert: Seen on every hipster of all agegroups, women are nailing it neutral with various shades of grey.

Going grey is the perfect color for the fashion conscious, or the gal just wishing to update her beauty routine.

Changing your nail polish from a pink neutral to grey is the easiest way to update your cosmetic routine this spring; the various shades are endless and work with everything.

Getting the Look: It’s easy to get stuck in a beauty rut, so the next time you find yourself at your favorite nail salon, change-up your polish, it’s the easiest and quickest way to update your beauty routine.

A Guide to a Salon/Spa Manicure:

1. Bring your own polish to the salon – my sisters and I do, often getting other clients asking for the color we are using.

2. Ask the nail technician to cut your nails short and file them rounder into an oval shape, instead of the normal square nail you’re familiar with – this is more feminine.

3. Apply one to two coats of the color of choice, making sure the color is just right, as the color changes with each coat.

4. Make sure to ask for a high-gloss top coat, this adds shine and a dose of glamour to already chic nails.

Dante Salon and Wellness Spa

Refined Elegance in the Heart of Fairfax

ABOUT

Situated – nay, make that practically hidden – in a small corner of a fairly visible strip mall in the heart of Fairfax, Dante Salon and Wellness Spa may well be the area’s most well-known blink-and-you’ll-miss-it beauty hotspots. Dante Noory, who originally chose to focus solely on hair services, founded it in 1999. Eventually, though, the menu expanded to include a more well rounded list of services, ranging from facials to waxing.

AMBIENCE

You may miss Dante Salon and Wellness Spa if you aren’t careful, so keep your eyes peeled for the Starbucks. Pop up the outdoor staircase and you’ll find yourself at a set of double doors that leads to a brief respite from the madness DC residents know as “traffic.” The spa exudes an aura of peace and effortless tranquility; both come easily thanks to the soft ivory walls, warm lighting and sparse décor. The Greek-style columns bring a hint of elegance to the otherwise low-key beauty haunt – although the ornate chandelier in the entry area is certainly worth a second glance. More appealing to beauty junkies are the walls lined with products from Paul Mitchell, Pureology, OPI and more.

EXPERIENCE

My shampoo, blow dry and flat iron service was a treat for my unruly mane on a blustery Saturday afternoon. Stylist Ann Marie Augustine escorted me to a small shampoo area and proceeded to thoroughly cleanse my hair with sulfate-free Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and followed with the complementary Hydrate Conditioner. Creamy and nourishing, both products worked their magic without stripping my color – and also happened to leave behind a glorious scent, too. Then it was on to the styling area, where Ann Marie coated my hair with Moroccanoil, one of the hair care industry’s most miraculous products. Formulated to smooth, soften and nourish all at once, the non-greasy oil penetrates strands and leaves it primed for a perfect blow dry. That’s precisely what I got, too, thanks to Ann Marie’s expertise. After about 20 minutes of drying and flat ironing, my hair felt silky smooth – so much so that I couldn’t keep my hands off it.

IN CROWD

With their reasonable prices, this generally no-frills spa draws wallet watchers who still demand an upscale experience.

WALLET WATCH

A shampoo, blow dry and flat iron service starts at $45. A shampoo, blow dry and curling iron service starts at $50.

Brings Tips and Toes to Life

Tangerine Brings Tips and Toes to LifeWHERE TO FIND

Expect to see juicy-toned digits all over town as we move into spring.

TREND ALERT

Pantone named Tangerine Tango its the color of the year for 2012, so it’s really no wonder the sensational hue is popping up just about everywhere. The fresh and uplifting hue is really making its rounds, on everything from dinnerware to fashion (natch). But what really has women in Washington, DC excited right now is clearly a bold burst of tangerine nail color. Though its influence on style is unsurpassed (just witness the models who took to the runways at various Fashion Weeks last fall in the most brazen of pieces – think tangerine fur vests and brilliant shift dresses), it’s not the easiest color in the world to wear. A pop of tangerine nail color, though, makes it easy for everyone.

GET THE LOOK

Tangerine Brings Tips and Toes to LifeThink of tangerine as a trademark color of sorts – it could easily become your calling card this year. The warm hue is at once sexy and playful, and just so much fun to wear. Make it the focal point of your peep-toe pumps or dress up your fingernails in something other than your usual neutral. These nail polishes, in a variety of tangerine-based shades, are sure to be favorites:

China Glaze Aztec Orange: Hey, showoff! If you’re feeling especially fearless, get acquainted with Aztec Orange. It’s a favorite at the Ulta store in Rockville, Maryland.

OPI Mod-ern Girl: Possibly the most versatile tangerine shade yet! Mod-ern Girl is a good-time color destined to see you through hazy summer nights and early boardwalk runs.

L’Oreal Tangerine Crush: Perhaps you’re not quite sold on this whole tangerine thing just yet. If that describes you, get thee to your local drugstore and pick up a bottle of Tangerine Crush. With a touch of pink, it’s far more approachable and less frightening than your everyday shock of orange. The gals in the beauty department at CVS on 14th St. downtown say it’s a hot seller.
