OzThough film lovers are waiting with bated breath to see whether Oz The Great and Powerful meets expectations, beauty junkies, at the very least, have good reason to rejoice. The upcoming Disney feature film, adapted from the classic L. Frank Baum novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, is the inspiration behind OPI’s new nail polish collection.

OPI is very excited to take this fantastical journey with Disney,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director. “Inspired by the magic of Oz The Great and Powerful, this SoftShades collection captures the whimsy seen in the film.” The limited-edition range includes six stunning colors, plus a new addition to the Liquid Sand collection:

Lights of Emerald City: A party in a bottle, this white confetti-tinged polish dazzles with a sparkling, shiny finish.
Don’t Burst My Bubble: Pale, pretty and as prim as Dorothy herself, this color leaves nails with a coat of classy, warmed up white.
When Monkeys Fly!: Those scary monkeys have nothing on this bold and beautiful nail polish, which is infused with chunky gold glitter.
Glints of Glinda: Glinda the Good Witch may be one of the loveliest fictional characters in existence, so it’s fitting that this eponymous beige nail polish is equally posh.
Which Is Witch?: Pump up any party look with this glittery, disco-ball inspired color that flashes iridescent beneath the lights.
I Theodora You: For a look that’s simply darling – and incredibly versatile, too – try this soft and delicate pink.
What Wizardry Is This?: A new member of the OPI Liquid Sand line, this deep taupe, matte polish dries to a textured finish. The color itself was designed in honor of James Franco’s character (the Wizard of Oz).

Perfect to see you through spring and into summer, the range reflects the upcoming season’s mood beautifully. Whether your preference is sweet and demure or bold and party-perfect, there’s a shade in this mix to suit any occasion.

Availability: The collection will launch in March 2013 at professional salons, including Beauty Brands, Beauty First, Chatters, Dillard’s, jcp Salons, Pure Beauty, Regis, Trade Secret and ULTA for $9 each.

NAILS THAT SPARKLE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

LUXURIOUS WINTER NAIL COLORS

TREND ALERT:  The weather has finally cooled down here in Austin, Texas and everyone is finally getting to bust out their winter wear.  What’s the perfect complement to a decadent winter outfit comprised of fur and lace? A little sparkle of course!  The holiday parties are soon approaching and a little sparkle goes a long way at the family affair, office party, or get together with friends.  The easiest way to add a bit of sparkle to your look this winter is with your nail polish.

While glitter polish can sometimes tend to look a bit youthful, this season glitter polish is the perfect accent for a mature look.  Think a sheer black lace dress with a fur coat and a splash of deep red sparkle on your nails to top it off.  This winter think of your polish as an accessory as important as jewelry.

WHERE TO FIND:  The newest collection of nail polish colors from Essie for this winter season is all about luxury.  Try the “leading lady” polish, a deep red with sparkly glitter that will turn heads and make you feel like a sophisticated Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.  Or go for the “beyond cozy” shade of silver with a hint of gold and sparkle.  This metallic glitter color is surprisingly a neutral that will work with all your party dresses this season, and is THE perfect nail color for that New Year’s party.

Other colors from the Essie winter collection include “butler please”, a bright indulgent blue, and “where’s my chauffer”, an opulent turquoise.  This winter is all about feeling special, and looking special.  Everyone deserves a little luxury every now and then.

GETTING THE LOOK:
Essie nail polishes can be found at many nail boutiques around town, or you can purchase your winter nail sparkle on the Essie online store

ABOUT

Nail art has been making waves in LA for quite some time now, decals, accent nails and neon polish have all been major trends that have stood strong through the Spring and Summer months. As we move into the colder season, it seems as though the trend is still warming up, in a big way. You see- It’s no longer just about 1 type of nail accented, it’s all of them! In different textures, colors, gems, styles and more. The more complicated and artistic, the better.

So why the sudden boost in popularity? Many argue it’s a major form of artistic creation, a perfect compliment to any outfit, or simply just fitting with your own personality or mood at the time. The nail trend is getting so popular across the city, mini manicure stations are popping up all over, parties…events and even fashion previews!

AMBIENCE

The style is as eclectic as you make it. Want to show a more funky side? Need to pair the perfect nail to your look for the evening? Anything goes, as there’s truly no rules in this beauty game!

EXPERIENCE

Find an experienced nail artist at your local salon or check around social media to see who’s trending and a popular artist in your area. Many talented manicurists do house calls, especially those who specialize in very technical, intricate designs, and really…who doesn’t love having their mani/pedi right in the privacy and comfort of your own home.

IN CROWD

Catt Sadler, Rhianna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce have all been fans of rocking some serious claws as of late, not to mention many of LA’s most largest fashion influences. A slew of bloggers and editors have been trying the designs as well, including yours truly!

WALLET WATCH

Prices can vary based on artist and what type of manicure you are getting. Be sure to ask about pricing prior to booking.

NEED TO KNOW

For good manicure maintenance, try adding a bit of top coat to your nails every few days. My pick? Seche Vite is a classic, the quality can’t be beat! If your looking for a fabulous LA based artist, try Nail Swag (check out the picture above for a preview of her work, also be sure to visit her Tumblr account for more!).

Boosting Beauty From the Inside Out

Christina Marrale  Posted Monday, July 23, 2012 by ,

Boosting beauty from the inside out is a sure fire way to reap the benefits of great skin, hair, and nails. What we put into our body is just as important, if not more so, than what we use to treat topically on a daily basis. Though I prefer to get the majority of my daily dosage of vitamins through consuming fresh fruits and veggies, supplementation is a perfect fix for any gal on the go who’s in need of a boost in their beauty routine.

Here are just a few of the manywonderful supplement/vitamins making strides in the wellness industry, and in my own beauty regimen as of late:

BIOTIN (also known as Vitamin H): An essential supplement to many who are lusting after long, luxurious, and healthy locks, Biotin is proven to aide in the prevention of hair loss, and promote growth in the anagen phase. The supplement also protects hair against dryness by being involved in the biosynthesis of unsaturated fats. Lack of biotin has been shown to be one of the leading causes in hair loss for both men and women.

OMEGA: Omega’s aren’t just for proper heart health, as this wonder supplement aides in healing dry skin, psoriasis, and eczema, in addition to promoting a healthy, youthful glow. These healthy fats are a key component of the lubricating layer that keeps skin supple, preventing future wrinkles and hollowing of the skin. Another fun fact? In a recent study, participants showed less sensitivity to UV rays after taking an Omega supplement…great news for those that love to soak up the sun.

B-COMPLEX: Or as my husband and I like to call it, the “happy” pill, due to it’s abilities to improve mood and overall alertness. The complex is a family of water-soluble vitamins that includes vitamins B-1, B-2, B-3, B-5, B-6, B-12, and folic acid. A daily B-Complex supplement works to counteract damage caused by free radicals, in addition to fending off gray hair and restoring natural hair color. This supplement also may contain Biotin; be sure to read the label on the package to be sure.

ALA (Alppa Lipoic Acid): Vital for cell energy production, ALA protects against free radicals and is considered one of the most powerful and beneficial anti-inflammatory antioxidants to fight aging and weight problems by aiding cellular metabolism. ALA’s ability to regenerate skin is remarkable, leading it to be one of the most powerful and popular supplements in recent years.

I must note, that I did not include recommended dosage in this post, as I am not a licensed health practitioner. For dosage information, please speak with your local health provider.

A GUIDE TO TIPPING

Christina Marrale  Posted Thursday, February 9, 2012 by ,

Ever find yourself in the position where you have a service done (such as a haircut, color, mani/pedi etc) and can’t quite figure out what to leave for a tip? Today is a lesson in tipping etiquette my friends! After doing a little research, I’ve got the lowdown on what’s appropriate and what’s not…and everything in between:

Hairdresser: 15-20% of the service price. Yes…this can get expensive, but that’s the standard rate for beauty these days. Luckily for most, a visit to the salon comes every 2-3 months, so it isn’t a total bank breaker. Be sure to remember, if you have a separate person washing your hair, it’s courteous to leave a few dollars for them as well. I usually hand them a $5 bill and leave the tip for my hairdresser at the front desk.

Nails: This can vary due to what type of mani/pedi you are getting. Basic? Tip 15%. If you are getting a design, or having fake nails put on, I would hand them a few more extra dollars due to the extra work. If you have two separate people working on you, be sure to split the tip. I’ve witnessed many times one worker taking the total tip for herself. Be sure to walk it over to each separately, and give your thanks.

Wax: Again, 15-20%. Though, I tend to base this one on how much I am getting, um…removed. If it’s been a while since my last bikini wax, it’s safe to say I am going to give a few extra bucks for the extra product needed to get the job done. When your checking out, always look for an envelope to leave the money. My place does not have them, so I hand it to my girl as soon as we’ve finished the service.

Spa: 15-20%. Like hair, this can get pretty pricey depending on the amount of services ( look into getting a monthly membership, it’s cheaper than paying for all those services separately!) Getting the works done…massage, facial etc? Be sure to tip for each service. Spa’s almost always have small envelopes that you can leave your cash in at the front desk.

Makeup: If you head to the mall, Most makeup counters do not allow their artists to receive cash tips. When I worked at MAC, many times I would receive a treat from the food court (hello Cinnabon!) a gift card, or a friendly note showing gratitude that was left in the hands of my manager instead. Getting your makeup professionally done? Be sure to leave them at least 15%. Though they may be charging you apretty penny, makeup artists need to replenish their kit, cover gas/parking fee’s etc. Once it’s all said and done, they may not be banking what you think they are. A tip helps cover the costs, along with showing gratitude for the service provided.

A few more things to remember:

  • Always have cash on you. After working in this industry for a while, I will tell you…almost always cash is preferred. If however you only have your card on you, don’t sweat it, most places accept credit cards.
  • At the end of the day, the amount you tip always depends on you and your own judgement. Never skip out on the tip just because the person had an attitude, or simply because did not enjoy the service(s). If you have encountered bad customer service, just ask to speak to a manager and explain the dissatisfaction behind your experience. It is unfair to leave the person nothing. For most, tips make up a large portion of  income. You could have caught them on an “off” day or so on. If by chance you come across another poor experience at the same place, at that point consider it a major red flag and take your business elsewhere.

If you have had an excellent experience, be sure to not only tip them well, but let the manager know. Many places pride themselves on customer service, have contests for staff members or an incentive program. No manager on site? Leave a comment on Yelp.com for them to spot later. It gives you good karma, and makes for one happy employee!
