Spring/Summer 2013 Hair Trends

Creative Consultant Guido Palau for Redken is found behind every fashion show styling the tresses of the world’s most sought-after models, not only preparing them for their walk down the runway but creating hair trends that leave us wishing we were experts  wielding a hairbrush and blow-dryer, and thanks to Redken we can achieve runway locks at home with these mini tutorials.

For Spring/Summer 2013 Guido gives us his predictions, a return to simple and modern minimalism.

”This season, designers wanted to achieve different textures and really push the artistic boundaries of hair. There were a lot of references to the mid-90s, when minimalism came into fashion, and also the 60s. It was about attitude and technique-nothing was left to chance.” Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

There are 4 key looks this season, all pushing the boundaries of traditional styling, paying homage to the 60’s and mid-90’s.

The first is Modern Minimalist, a reinvented twist on straight hair styled with precision. Examples are seen at Celine, Versace and Roberto Cavali. To achieve the look Guido used Satinwear 02 Prepping blow-dry lotion, centered a precise part, blow-dried and finished with a flat iron. Optional is gathering your tresses into a low ponytail and polishing your look with Shine Flash 02 Finishing Mist for incredible shine.

Factory Girls is paying tribute to the structured styles of the 60’s.  At Marc Jacobs Guido combined Studio 54 with NYC Street Style, targeting sections with guts 10 root volume spray foam to damp hair before blow-drying straight.  After creating a deep side part he misted locks with quick tease 15 backcombing finishing spray on the roots for height.  Finally gathering hair into a low ponytail he sprayed refresh 01 aerosol hair powder/dry shampoo and pulled out a few wisps so that hair doesn’t look structured and overdone.

Deep Impact is super chic, grungy and utterly urban. Perfect examples were showcased at Calvin Klein, Diesel and Lanvin, modified for either a less-is-more or free-flowing style that represents modern femininity. Guido rough dried hair after applying full frame 07 volumizing mousse. Creating the classic side part he next applied powder grip 03 mattifying hair powder for an unrefined and polished look.

Double Vision is creating a dual-textured style seen at Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone.  A good example is the updated ponytail, to create this modern version Guido first blow-dried hair with All Soft Argan 6 Multi-Care Oil, gathering hair into a tight-to-the head ponytail. Curling the end of the ponytail with a conical curling iron he finished the look with fashion work 12 versatile finishing spray for texture and flexible hold.  If you want to get runway inspired you can add a strip of tape to your center part as seen at Alexander Wang.

Essential Spring Hair Accessories

Change up your ‘do just in time for the season

Essential Spring Hair AccessoriesCelebrity hair has been, well…a little weird lately – and that’s putting it mildly. First there was Katy Perry’s questionableSmurfette blue. Then came KeSha’s gold-studded ‘do. And in case you haven’t heard, Barbie is running for president and her mane is fashioned into a helmet of perfection so absurdly flawless, it’s likely to make Sarah Palin jealous.

Thank goodness the majority of us know better than to seek inspiration from the “Fashion Police” pages in US Weekly. Spring finds us all in that sort of in-between stage, when occasional heavy winds send strands wayward, April showers cause serious frizz and the odd bout of true humidity transforms locks from perfect to poufy.

To the rescue comes the almighty hair accessory – and I’m not talking about kooky studs and crazy fascinators, ladies. The racks are packed with creative pieces that demand attention and, more importantly, tame wildly unruly hair,  and add an element of polish and allow you to step outside the door with your head held high. Take a peek at some of the most beguiling:

Eugenia Kim – she of the amazing hats – also happens to turn out glorious hair accessories, too. Kim’s gorgeous Chiara Headband is nothing if not attention-grabbing; the juicy melon hue is a softer play on the year’s hot tangerine hue. Go full-on bohemian a la the model, or stick with tradition and wear it like a basic headband.

You’re familiar with statement necklaces and rings – now it’s time to meet the statement headband. Like an oversized jewel for your hair, Tasha’s Giant Gem Headband features a resin stone in your choice of four mouthwatering shades. Trimmed by complementary crystals, the piece feels at once princess-chic and sophisticated.

A lone embellishment smaller in scale is a stunning addition to a casual, slightly unkempt bun – and instantly dresses it up so you don’t feel quite so guilty about being “sloppy.” Deepa Gurnani’s Flower Crystal Hair Tie defines nonchalant elegance with its glazed stones and delicate floral silhouette.

Proof that it’s possible to adopt a new hair look for spring without falling prey to dubious celebrity trends, after all.

Hairstylist Shon Wows with Wet Hair at Cynthia Rowley

Look Beautiful With Less Effort

While most of us go to great lengths to dry our hair before even setting foot outside the house; a whole other legion of women are going the opposite route this spring. Designer Cynthia Rowley’s spring/summer 2012 runway was a showcase of more than just gorgeous fashion – it also highlighted the downtown-cool, effortless looking wet hair trend.

Hold back your gasps, ladies. Dampened tresses don’t have to leave you quivering in your stilettos, especially if you follow the helpful tips offered by the show’s lead hairstylist: Shon.

Using a variety of products from amika, Shon delivered mane magic at Cynthia Rowley – and now you can recreate the runway-glam look in the comfort of your own home. Follow his lead:

1. Spritz the hair with a volumizing product to create texture and volume. Shon used amika 2-in-1 Volumizing and Styling Spray.
2. For separation and even more shine, apply a serum, like the amika Obliphica Heat Defense Serum used by Shon.
3. Play with curlers of different barrel sizes to achieve textured curls in a variety of sizes.
4. Follow up with a generous application of thick curl-defining cream, like amika Obliphica Curl Defining Cream, to the roots. This will help create that unkempt, slightly greasy texture – and yes, that’s what what you want for this particular look, ladies.
5. Finish up by misting hair all over with a shine spray. Shon used amika Obliphica Finishing Shine Spray.

Voila! Wet hair that looks chic, stylish, and straight off the runway.
