Spring Break is just around the corner, and I know I can’t wait to get out of the cold, winter weather and put on my bikini and lay by the beach. We may have been able to cover up for the past few months, but now that we are shedding our layers for a week in the sun, you’ll want to tone up and feel healthy. Here are a few ways to get bikini body confident in one month.

Add just 20 minutes of cardio three to four times a week. You’ll burn an easy 200 – 250 calories in just 20 minutes, and you’ll definitely notice the results by the end of week four. Add an additional 10-15 minutes of strength training and abdominal exercises (adding just 100 crunches to your daily routine) for a fit, overall leaner body.
Eliminate foods and beverage that can both cause and increase bloating such as salty foods and carbonated beverages. Stop munching on potato chips and French fries and snack on fresh vegetables such as carrots and cherry tomatoes if a craving strikes. Instead of soda, make sure you are getting eight glasses of water a day; if you need extra flavor, squeeze half a lemon into your water, or make iced tea. Also limit alcoholic beverages to only one a week.
For a whittled waistline, cut out sugar, dairy and gluten for the month leading up to your vacation. Switch to almond milk, throw out the cookies and candy, and get rid of the white breads and pastas. You’ll notice better digestion and less bloating when you eliminate these three things.
Don’t stress. Stress increases cortisol which can lead to weight gain, especially around your mid section, which is the hardest to get rid of. Stress can also increase your appetite, which will deter your path to a bikini body.

With her strong beliefs and her social-media savvy, Rocha—on Oxygen’s The Face—is a standout in her field

The first thing that strikes you about Coco Rocha is, of course, her face. It has those perfect angles, the sharp, sculpted ones that seem to be a prerequisite for becoming a model. But before you can even process the rest of her otherworldly appearance—her flawless ivory complexion, her piercing blue eyes, her slim yet towering frame—you sense there’s a certain depth to her, something a bit more complex.

We’ve arranged to chat over lunch at a casual cafe-bakery in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. She arrives early, having taken the train in from New York’s Westchester County. “I honestly don’t mind it,” she says about taking public transportation. “People do it in any other city. It feels normal.” (She and her husband, muralist James Conran, moved there a year ago.)

As she enters the cafe, the 24-year-old doesn’t walk so much as float—a skill she picked up from her years on the runway. And if the people sitting at the tables near us don’t immediately recognize her, they probably whispered over their turkey sandwiches, “She has to be a model.” Today, the massive fur coat, black pants and stilettos she’s wearing are a dead giveaway.

Her first request is surprising: With autumn in the air, she’s in the mood for pumpkin pie today, so would it be OK if she had a slice for lunch? The Canadian-born model has recently wrapped production for Oxygen’s The Face, a new reality show (premiering February 12 at 9PM ET/PT) in which young women compete to become the face of Ulta Beauty. The show bills itself as giving a more realistic depiction of the challenges and demands of modeling than America’s Next Top Model—a series notorious for its jumping-out-of-planes and posing-with-snakes theatrics. Rocha serves as a mentor and coach for a team of four fledgling models, who compete against squads led by supermodels Naomi Campbell and Karolina Kurkova. Every week, each team competes to win an actual job.

It’s an opportunity the thoughtful, soft-spoken Rocha describes as “surreal,” and understandably so. Her career—gracing the cover of Vogue, walking the runways at the Paris, Milan and New York fashion shows, appearing in ad campaigns for Chanel and YSL—is unusual for someone like her. Rocha is a devout Jehovah’s Witness, as is her husband. “My faith is everything,” she declares. Raised by her mother, Rocha has been a Jehovah’s Witness her entire life, but she wasn’t baptized until 2009—the religion requires that individuals be old enough to make their own decisions before committing.

Spring/Summer 2013 Hair Trends

Creative Consultant Guido Palau for Redken is found behind every fashion show styling the tresses of the world’s most sought-after models, not only preparing them for their walk down the runway but creating hair trends that leave us wishing we were experts wielding a hairbrush and blow-dryer, and thanks to Redken we can achieve runway locks at home with these mini tutorials.

For Spring/Summer 2013 Guido gives us his predictions, a return to simple and modern minimalism.

”This season, designers wanted to achieve different textures and really push the artistic boundaries of hair. There were a lot of references to the mid-90s, when minimalism came into fashion, and also the 60s. It was about attitude and technique-nothing was left to chance.” - Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

There are 4 key looks this season, all pushing the boundaries of traditional styling, paying homage to the 60’s and mid-90’s.

The first is Modern Minimalist, a reinvented twist on straight hair styled with precision. Examples are seen at Celine, Versace and Roberto Cavali. To achieve the look Guido used Satinwear 02 Prepping blow-dry lotion, centered a precise part, blow-dried and finished with a flat iron. Optional is gathering your tresses into a low ponytail and polishing your look with Shine Flash 02 Finishing Mist for incredible shine.

Factory Girls is paying tribute to the structured styles of the 60’s. At Marc Jacobs Guido combined Studio 54 with NYC Street Style, targeting sections with guts 10 root volume spray foam to damp hair before blow-drying straight. After creating a deep side part he misted locks with quick tease 15 backcombing finishing spray on the roots for height. Finally gathering hair into a low ponytail he sprayed refresh 01 aerosol hair powder/dry shampoo and pulled out a few wisps so that hair doesn’t look structured and overdone.

Deep Impact is super chic, grungy and utterly urban. Perfect examples were showcased at Calvin Klein, Diesel and Lanvin, modified for either a less-is-more or free-flowing style that represents modern femininity. Guido rough dried hair after applying full frame 07 volumizing mousse. Creating the classic side part he next applied powder grip 03 mattifying hair powder for an unrefined and polished look.

Double Vision is creating a dual-textured style seen at Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone. A good example is the updated ponytail, to create this modern version Guido first blow-dried hair with All Soft Argan 6 Multi-Care Oil, gathering hair into a tight-to-the head ponytail. Curling the end of the ponytail with a conical curling iron he finished the look with fashion work 12 versatile finishing spray for texture and flexible hold. If you want to get runway inspired you can add a strip of tape to your center part as seen at Alexander Wang.

THE PERFECT NO-CHIP MANICURE

ABOUT Located along Division Street in the Wicker Park neighborhood is Sorelle, a fashion boutique and salon and spa owned by sisters Dalia and Luchy Manjarres. The salon and spa is a recent addition to the space, with the idea in mind that a woman should be able to get everything she needs under one roof: the perfect outfit, a manicure, and a new hairstyle.

AMBIENCE Dalia and Luchy wanted a space designed for women to look and feel good, which you will be reminded about with the words “Sexy from head to toe” written above the spa entrance. The front of Sorelle is the fashion boutique, and as you walk towards the back you’ll enter the salon, and then underneath the chandelier-style beading to the spa area that embodies femininity with the pink and black color scheme.

EXPERIENCE Upon entering Sorelle, I was immediately greeted and then I selected the colors I wanted for my fingers and toes, which took a few minutes thanks to the large selection of nail colors! I was offered water or tea, and then took a seat in one of the three black leather pedicure chairs. Dalia performed my pedicure, and she trimmed my toenails to my preferred length, filed them to the perfect shape and groomed my cuticles. A much-needed leg and foot massage and two coats of polish – I chose a deep burgundy shade by Essie, “Carry On” – completed my pedicure. Afterwards I was escorted to the manicure station and got comfortable in the pink leather chair. We decided on the No-Chip Manicure — Sorelle’s signature service — and I chose “You Don’t Know Jacques” as my polish color (Sorelle uses the OPI GelColor). Dalia trimmed my nails so they were even and filed them, and then she pushed back my cuticles but recommended not to cut them, saying “don’t fix what’s not broken.” The gel base was applied, and then two coats of the colored polish and a topcoat, and each time my nails had to “cure” under the light for 60 seconds. After the last 60 seconds after the topcoat application, my nails were completely dry and so shiny! This was my first No-Chip experience, and I am officially a convert. Nothing beats two weeks without chips, and I was able to walk out of the salon immediately without risking smudging or ruining my nails.

With every drastic hair cut, that dreaded, long, drawn out process of growing it out typically follows. DAILY EXERCISE: “Never go a day without working out for a minimum of 15 minutes,” says Harper. Do exercises that work multiple body parts at once and burn calories quickly. If you’re in a pinch, push-ups, squats and stairs can give you an intense workout in a short amount of time.
EAT BREAKFAST: “It kick starts the metabolism and will keep your energy level up,” says Harper. Stay away from sugar and high fat, and instead gravitate towards protein-rich egg whites or quinoa, that also have healthy fats to keep you feeling full.
PORTION CONTROL: ”When serving yourself, make sure all your food items don’t touch each other on your plate,” advises Harper. Remember that the average serving size for meal basics like rice or chicken is the palm of your hand.
MULTITASK: When you have a list of errands to get done, figure out how to exercise at the same time. “Ride your bike or run between errands, and bring a friend to make it fun,” suggests Harper.
WATER: You don’t have to give up alcohol to lose weight. “If drinking alcohol, always have a 10 oz glass of water between each beverage,” instructs Harper.

We are about a week and a half into January, so if you made a New Year’s resolution to get healthy, hopefully you are still going strong! In case you need a little motivation boost here are 13 healthy tips to incorporate into your 2013. Getting healthy is all about making small changes, so each one of these tips is a quick easy thing you can do to live a healthier life in the new year.

1. Walk More: It turns out, sitting is really bad for us. It’s essential to get up on your feet everyday and in fact, doctors say we need to get at least 10,000 steps per day to maintain our weight and to promote physical fitness. Find sneaky ways to get more walking in, like moving around while you chat on the phone or taking an evening stroll.

2. Portion Control: We often eat much larger portions than we need to. A portion of meat should be the size of your fist, if you use butter it should be the size of the top of your thumb and half of your plate should always be filled with fruits and veggies.

3. Find A Workout You Like: If the treadmill isn’t for you then don’t worry about it. If you find exercises you enjoy doing you’ll be more apt to keep it up, so whether it’s dancing, a group exercise class or walking the dog, find something you like to do.

4. Pack Your Lunch: You’ll save calories and money…who doesn’t love that!

5. Sweat Every Day: Even if it is only for 10 minutes, break a sweat each day. Play with your kids, jump rope even play the Kinect…just do something to get the blood going.

6. Eat An Apple A Day: This is one of the easiest ways to improve your eating habits…apples have tons of nutrients and belly slimming fiber plus they are so easy to eat on the go.

7. Try A New Workout: Switching up your regular routine will keep both you and your body from getting bored. Hit up yoga, Zumba a barre class or visit the new spinning studio.

8. Workout With A Friend: This tip will help you keep you workout appointments, plus spending time with friends is a great stress reliever.

9. Track Your Progress: There a so many apps and websites out there that help you keep track of weight loss or how many miles you’ve run , etc. I think tracking your progress is a great motivator because you can see how far you’ve come and you can see yourself getting closer to reaching your goals.

10. Eat Breakfast: People who eat breakfast weigh less than those who skip it. So grab a bowl of oatmeal or whole grain toast with peanut butter to get you going in the morning.

11. Try A Food Journal: Oh, food journals are one of my favorite weight loss tools. It turn out that half a cookie I keep eating eventually adds up to two or three cookies and much to my dismay, those calories actually count. Writing down what you eat helps you get a handle on what you’re putting into your body.

12. Lay out your workout clothes at night: Make your life a little easier and put all your workout stuff (clothes, shoes, socks, iPod play list) together at night and you’ll have one less excuse not to hit the gym in the morning.

13. Breathe: Stress is one of the worst things for our health…so in the new year, try to have less of it. Of course, life is bound to throw us crazy things, but if you take time to sit quietly and breathe each day, you’ll find yourself feeling calmer and more centered.

Seattle isn’t exactly know for it’s warm sunny weather, and when the winter months roll in, it’s rain rain rain. That’s why paying a visit to Urban Yoga Spa in January and February is almost essential for your sanity . The Hot Yoga room is a welcome respit from the dreary outdoors…the room in hot, like a vacation in Tahiti hot. And how great it this, not only does the location offer Hot Yoga classes, you can also enjoy massages, manicures and pedicures, acupuncture, eyelash extensions and waxing.

AMBIENCE

You can’t miss this literal hot spot, as it resides on the corner of 4th and Stewart just blocks from Seattle’s downtown shopping core. The windows are large and reveal open, contemporary interiors done in serene whites, smooth reflective surfaces and geometric pops of black. This location is very zen, but it’s not your earthy kind of yoga studio. When you visit Urban Yoga Spa you know you’re downtown and it’s much more spa like..polished, sophisticated and very chic.

EXPERIENCE

Several friends of mine swear by Urban Yoga Spa, and since they sports some of the most impossibly tight triceps and flat abs, I knew I had to give it a try. The yoga room is very large with white walls, mirrors lining the front and sides and very tall ceilings. Cathy is one of the most popular instructors, so my friends suggested I visit her class first, and as luck would have it, it chose an special Madonna themed session. (In my opinion, when the opportunity arises to listen to Madonna music for and hour, one does not turn it down!) The air was thick with humidity and the wall of heat hit me as I walked in the room…it was just what I needed. We flowed through several yoga sequences and when the intensity and heat where too much, I just laid down and enjoyed the warmth. The workout was INTENSE, and I may or may not have checked my watch several times to see if was going to make it. Afterward, however, I have never, and I mean never, felt better. There was a sense of calm and zen that I have never felt before or since, and I have to say, I crave that feeling. Plus I long for the hot room when that cold Seattle wind starts to blow.

If you want to check out the spa, just head upstairs. You’re greeted with an immaculate white sanctuary bathed in natural light from the large windows overlooking the bustling streets below. You’ll find nail stations and massage rooms, it’s the ideal place to pamper your body inside and out.
